Today we decided it was about time to show some locals our new tracks - Camber Gambler & Wide Open - which are only just about finished, but we just couldn't wait to show them to someone. So two talented young local lads, Rui Barradas and Filipe Vicente, came along to smash out some laps with us.
Despite both being experienced riders, neither of them had ridden this sort of track before. Most tracks in this area are fast and flowy, without too many technically challenging features. Camber Gambler is extremely steep and technical with some very gnarly gaps and drops. Wide Open does exactly what is says on the tin - very fast, multi line, gnarly, and the biggest jump line in the area (if anyone would like to challenge that statement please contact us cause we'd very much like to see it, and if we're wrong, we'll build an even bigger line with you!)
It got off to a really good start, Rui and Filipe took the challenge in their stride. I reckon both are natural steep terrain riders. Watch out for them in the future. We hit up Wide Open first just to get into the swing of things. It's a good way to get used to the full on gnar of the Gambler because the two tracks converge for a few hundred meters. The "squirrel catcher" at the top of the trail was dealt with in no time. It's a sneaky little jump over a ditch which is designed more to stop MX riders from tearing up our tracks than to weed out the incapable riders.
Then it was time for a session on the giant hip in the bowls where it is quickly starting to look like it will end up being a freeride-bikepark-playground area, half way down the Wide Open track. The lads quickly got used to the very oversized style of the hip and we banged out a good few shots.
We greatly appreciated the feedback from them about the trail and what we can do to further progress the sport of downhill in the area. Stay tuned for future uplift days.
